Two Friends - A DJ Duo Primed To Take Over The Scene

Two Friends is a DJ duo consisting of well..two friends named Matt Harper and Eli Sones who met in the 7th grade! You can learn a lot about them like I did from the following five interviews conduced by various media outlets: One, two, three, four, five.

Below is the additional things I learned as well as a recap of the night at UNH on 4/21/17.

Matt and Eli

To say that the duo’s music is taking off is an understatement. Their Soundcloud has millions of plays, they’re on a cross country tour, and I even learned that The Chainsmokers dropped one of their remixes at ULTRA 2016. They were in Philadelphia last night, and the day after the UNH show they went out to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The day after that they flew home to Los Angeles, California…

I learned through some of the interviews above that Matt and Eli actually attended different colleges, but were still able to keep working on the Two Friends project in a “long distance relationship.” I asked them to elaborate on this and how they got through that in my interview and this is how Matt responded: “We basically just had to figure it out because that was all we knew. We separated off to college immediately after high school; it wasn’t like we were already in a routine- and we kept making music. The way we saw it was we both worked on music individually, and then when we were done with something we would text, Skype, etc. It was almost like we were doubly as productive that way.”

Eli added that they had a lot of time on school vacations to collaborate as well. Plus, “By the time we were back together in LA after we graduated we had a lot of stuff to go off of and we kind of had an idea of how to approach everything workflow wise. It was definitely much easier when we were physically together again too.”

I then gave them a question they weren’t expecting pertaining to "the underground LA party scene” as I call it. I basically asked them if they had ever attended or performed at any of these parties, and I brought up “Brownies and Lemonade,” which is basically an outlet to these “secret” shows thrown for mainly up and coming but talented artists in and around LA. Both of them knew what I was talking about, but they agreed that they have never been to a Brownies and Lemonade specific party. They have however, been to some underground parties, and judging from their reaction and laughter, it sounded like they were a good time!

Some other names they mentioned that I will be doing further research on are: “Space Yacht” and “Dim Mak Tuesdays.” Matt added that these underground parties are usually on weekdays, and “We used to go, but being hungover the next day was very counterproductive when it came to our projects. It was tough getting things done when we partied so much.”

On where they see themselves in 5 years: Matt said, “It kind of depends where music takes us. It’s always hard to tell…like if you asked us 5 years ago where we’d be today, we would’ve been so off. You never know where music is going to take you. Eli added, “On a more personal level, there could be some things that have such an impact that it’s impossible to predict them. An artist’s path is definitely not linear to say the least.”

As for their set, they played a lot off of their latest “Big Bootie Mix.” The crowd wasn’t huge, but those who were there had a killer time! Two Friends kept them dancing all night long, and they even dropped their newest single, Emily, which literally was released to the public hours before their set. It was very exciting stuff, and I can’t wait to see how far Two Friends can go.
