The following interview with Matt Young was conducted by Phil Fazioli on April 8th, 2017 at the Worcester Palladium. The event was called the "Worcester White Out," and it was presented by Sonex DJ Co.
Phil: So you're premiering a new name tonight, right?
Matt: Yeah, we're premiering a duo tonight - me and DJ Ekko. We're starting a side project, MYEK.
Phil: What does that stand for?
Matt: MYEK is our initials, "Matt Young, Eli Korin."
Phil: So tell me about the project.
Matt: It's looking to be dope - the whole goal is to bring festivals to the clubs - just throwing out festival banger after festival banger.
Phil: Do your classmates know you DJ? What year are you? How much support do you get from them.
Matt: Well I'm a Junior at Lincoln-Sudbury. As for support, it's very split: there's a subset of kids that tell me I'm going to be famous one day, they come to all my shows, they believe in me, everything. Then there's a group that say, "He's just doing it to do it, he's not going to get anywhere with this."
Phil: Do you expect more or less support than you've been getting?
Matt: I take what I can get. Recently, and leading up to this show, I've been getting a lot more support. I've even been able to start selling merchandise.
Phil: Checking out your influences on Facebook, I took note of Boston DJs Dude N' Guy (see a past interview with them, here). When you mentioned you are trying to bring the festival to the club, this is exactly what I see Dude N' Guy doing in their sets. Can you speak on this?
Matt: Honestly, when I started DJing, back when I turned 14 and my dad got me my first DJ controller (by the way he's my biggest supporter, he comes to all my shows, and he's here tonight). He bought me this $200 NUMARK controller, and I just started working on it. One of the first shows I went to was the FEED ME concert back in 2014 - and Dude N' Guy opened for that show.
Phil: I saw another one of your influences is renowned mashup artist, DJ EARWORM. What do you think of the concept of a mashup?
Matt: I respect the mashup. When I first started, all I did was make mashups for about a year. I'd play house parties and just use acapellas and instrumentals that I found, and I experimented with that for awhile.
Phil: Thank you for your time. Is there anything else you want to say? A word to the fans, maybe.
Matt: There's not much I want to say...honestly just to thank the people who have supported me from the beginning: especially my friends Elena, Will, Jack and my dad.
