So yesterday, the high school that I work at had a guest motivational speaker come in for a school-wide assembly. His name is James Orrigo. James is a young "Lad in a Battle" as he calls his work and passion. He lost his mother to cancer, and since that happened, he has set out across the nation on a "Hospital Tour" where he writes and performs songs with terminally ill children. He even puts his video editing and cartoon drawing skills to work and creates music videos to go alongside what he and the children write. More details on James and his projects can be found through this YouTube video or by emailing him at ladinabattle@gmail.com.
His goal is to create "legacies" for the children who unfortunately don't get to live a full life. James shared a couple of these legacies and stories during his presentation, and many parts almost brought me to tears. In short, his presentation inspired me. James preached that your goal in life should be to take something you're good at and use it to make other people's struggles and hardships more pleasant and positive experience. For example, the songs and videos he creates with the children "distract" them from their cancer treatments, and they give them something to look forward to.
I want to do something just like this. My passion is electronic dance music, and I am a part time DJ - thoughts and ideas were racing through my head during James' presentation. Maybe I could give a talk about all the good that comes out of the EDM community - how despite the negative connotation of the word, "raver," most ravers are unbiased, loving, exciting and fresh dance enthusiasts who are looking to make new friends and have fun. ...Maybe I could even spin some music in and around my talk. ...Could I bring some entertainment with me to spice things up? - shufflers, Poi performers, glovers, etc. The ideas were rolling!!
What do you guys think? Do you think I could reach youth in this way? Inspire them? Bring them to do good things with their lives? Electronic Dance Music culture can be such a positive force, I just need to find a way to show people that.
